The Japanese Garden is excited to announce our new installation of our old Stone Lantern… over 100 years old to be exact!
The Ishi-doro (stone lantern) pictured was imported from Japan and is one of 4 lanterns purchased by the Mayor’s Citizens Advisory Committee Trust Fund. This particular lantern is an antique in the Kasuga style, is over 125 years old, and is unique in comparison to other lanterns used in the garden. The lotus is the main theme of this lantern and its use ahead of the garden’s main entrance marks the beginning of the visitor’s experience and its connection with water. The Japanese Garden revolves around water with its home at LASAN’S Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant, and its Japanese name “SuihoEn,” which means “The Garden of Water and Fragrance”.
Building this installation would not have been possible without the hard work of the Department of Sanitation Maintenance Staff! (see pictures above that show their attention to detail)
