The Art of Painted Scrolls

February 9, 2025 - 9:30AM - 3:30PM

The Japanese Garden is excited to announce that we will be open Sunday, February 9th!

We will have art stations set up for guest to paint their own “Japanese” style scrolls.  There will also be a Bonsai demonstration and Kamishibai Storytelling for kids.

Kakejiku, or “Hanging scroll,” incorporates calligraphy and painted objects on parchment that can be displayed, depending on the aesthetic need.

The origin is said to date back to the Nara period (710-794). At first, they were used for religious purposes.

With the development of tea culture, it has been valued as a decorative element in traditional Japanese drawing rooms known as Tokonoma (alcoves).

Since the Edo period (1603-1868), kakejiku became increasingly valuable as a work of art. Today, artists are free to depict a multitude of subjects via their scrolls, allowing for personal expression, and changing environments.
